An example of eco hostel: Casa Felipe

Buenos dias desde Guatemala! Hi all, yesterday I arrived in San Pedro la Laguna to visit my friend Pamela who runs the hostel Casa Felipe and what a surprise seeing that her and her boyfriend Leo decided to run it ecologically! I thought that everything comes at the perfect time and guess what? Even San Pedro is starting to turn in an environmental village. Given that Pamela and Leo have just started running the business in September 2016, so far they have done an amazing job in turning it eco and if I think about it they have actually implemented very simple tricks that can turn any average household in a more environmental friendly one without having to actualize major changes to the structure itself.

In the kitchen where the guests can cook there are five labeled bins so that guests can easily understand how to divide their trash. In the first picture above you can see three recycling bins. Recycling in San Pedro involves plastic bottles, cans, and glass. Next to them there is a miscellaneous trash bin with a sign explaining what can go inside and under the kitchen sink there is the organic bin, where you can throw veggie and fruit scraps and the rest of your food, if any. In case you still didn’t understand how to divide your garbage, on the wall there is a guide on how to properly divide the trash to be thrown into the corret bin. To avoid using the electricity to light up the room during the day, a small round hole in the roof was perfect for fixing in a big soda bottle filled with water which eradiates the sunrays inside the place. On the back of each bathroom door they put a sign explaining how the hostel is trying to save water and how guests can help too. Especially, do not throw toilet paper in the wc! 🙂 In order to reuse water coming from the faucets of the bathroom, Leo developed a rudimental yet working filter system (2° pic) that cleans the water. By passing through a row of buckets filled with stones, all the soap and toothpaste remaing in the water get trapped among the stones and the water flows out clean. They then use it to water the little veggie garden where they grow basil, tomatoes, flowers, chilli peppers, rosemary, etc. Guests can help themselves (3° pic) and use them for their meal. They use recycled toilet paper, energy saving light bulbs and serve vegan or vegetarian dinners so to have a lower impact on Earth.

As I said, surprisingly San Pedro is a little town that keeps nature at heart. In the pictures below, you can see some of the signs you can spot around town. I have to say this shift has just started so you can still see trash around or the use of plastic, but little by little locals are starting to understand how important our Mother Earth is.

UN ESEMPIO DI OSTELLO ECOLOGICO:CASA FELIPE

Buenos dias desde Guatemala! Ciao a tutti! Ieri sono arrivata a San Pedro la Laguna dove abita la mia amica Pamela, manager dell’ostello Casa Felipe. Che sorpresa vedere che Pamela e il suo ragazzo stanno gestendo un ostello ecologico! Ho pensato che tutto arriva al momento giusto e inoltre perfino San Pedro stessa sta iniziando un percorso verso l’ecologia. Dal momento che i miei amici hanno iniziato la gestione solo a settembre 2016, l’incredibile lavoro che hanno fatto finora per rendere l’ostello più ecocompatibile è a dir poco impressionante: attraverso delle astuzie molto semplici che si possono applicare a qualsiasi abitazione, hanno convertito un normale ostello in una struttura ricettiva ecocompatibile che sprona e sensibilizza i proprio ospiti al rispetto e alla cura dell’ambiente.

Nella cucina per gli ospiti sono stati posizionati cinque bidoni etichettati a seconda del materiale di rifiuto, in modo che gli ospiti possano facilmente sapere dove gettare la propria spazzatura. Nella prima immagine, si possono notare tre bidoni del riciclo. A San Pedro si riciclano bottiglie di plastica, lattine di metallo e vetro. Accanto ad essi (non presente nella foto), si trova un bidone dell’indifferenziata, anch’esso etichettato con la lista di materiali che è possibile gettare. Infine, sotto al lavello, vi è il quinto bidone dell’organico. Nel caso non fosse ancora chiaro come suddividere la propria spazzatura, sul muro è affisso un cartello (foto 1) riportante una guida sulla ripartizione dell’immondizia. Per risparmiare sull’uso di energia elettrica, durante il giorno, la cucina è inondata di luce grazie a un piccolo foro rotondo sul tetto della grandezza necessaria per fare passare al suo interno una bottiglia grande piena d’acqua che serve per irradiare i raggi del sole all’interno della stanza. Sul retro della porta di ogni bagno, è stato affisso un cartello (foto 1) che spiega come risparmiare acqua, bene prezioso, quando si va in bagno o si fa una doccia. Soprattutto, vietatissimo gettare la carta igienica nel water! 🙂

Per riutilizzare l’acqua dei rubinetti in uno dei bagni, Leo ha sviluppato un sistema di filtraggio (foto 2) rudimentale ma perfettamente funzionante che ripulisce l’acqua. Questa, passando attraverso una fila di secchi riempiti di pietre, viene purificata da resti di dentrificio e sapone che rimangono intrappolati tra le pietre. Quest’acqua, così ripulita, è utilizzata per innaffiare il loro piccolo orticello di piante aromatiche, fiori, pomodori, ecc. Gli ospiti possono usufruire delle piante dell’orto servendosene con moderazione (foto 3). Infine, la carta igienica è carta riciclata, le lampadine elettriche sono a ridotto consumo di energia e il pasto serale che servono, a mo di cena familiare, è vegetariano o vegano, in modo da ridurre l’impatto di CO2 sulla Terra.

Come menzionato all’inizio del post,  San Pedro la Laguna è un piccolo villaggio che ha a cuore la natura. Nelle immagini che seguono, è possibile notare alcuni graffiti che s’incontrano per strada. È  giusto fare notare che si tratta di un cambiamento appena iniziato e di conseguenza è ancora ampio l’uso di plastica o vedere immondizia gettata ovunque. Tuttavia, a poco a poco, la gente del posto sta iniziando a capire quanto sia importante la nostra Madre Terra.
