Dopo un altro mezzo secolo di silenzio, eccomi di nuovo qui con qualche aggiornamento. Sono tornata in madrepatria e sono tornata carica di buoni intenti.
Da un po’ di mesi seguo assiduamente il blog di Lindsay, Treading my own path, questo sì che è un blog serio, e sono venuta a conoscenza di un’iniziativa chiamata Plastic Free July, nata nel 2011 da parte del Western Metropolitan Regional Council di Perth e sviluppata dall’associazione Earth Carers. In poche parole, come già si può capire dal nome, si tratta di evitare il più possibile l’acquisto di prodotti che contengono imballaggi in plastica. Mi è sembrata un’idea ottima, soprattutto un perfetto trampolino di lancio per cercare di sensibilizzare le persone sul tema della plastica e del suo uso spropositato. Così, dato che credo fermamente nel motto di Gandhi “sii il cambiamento che desideri vedere nel mondo”, ho deciso di prendere parte anche io e addirittura mi sono lanciata nell’organizzazione di un piccolo incontro informale per rendere partecipi i miei concittadini di questa bella iniziativa. Dato che non siamo in Australia e pertanto non abbiamo le stesse opportunità per affrontare realmente un luglio senza plastica, ho puntato soprattutto sull’importanza del riutilizzo, anche dei contenitori in plastica che già possediamo in casa, e ho presentato qualche alternativa più ecosostenibile alla plastica di cui facciamo uso tutti i giorni a partire dalle buste per la spesa riutilizzabili, o bottiglie d’acqua riutilizzabili. L’affluenza è stata tanta: mia mamma, le mie due zie, un’amica di famiglia, mia cugina con il ragazzo e cinque amici. Ma, come mi ha fatto notare qualcuno, l’importante è avere gettato i semi che poi piano piano cresceranno e daranno dei frutti. Speriamo. Intanto, nei prossimi post inizierò a dare qualche spunto per passare ad alternative senza plastica, così che anche voi (oh mio pubblico immaginario!) possiate prendere parte a un Luglio Senza Plastica, ricordandosi sempre che l’importante è fare del proprio meglio!

After months of complete inactivity again, here I am with some updates. I came back home (sigh!) and I am full of great ideas!
Since a few months, I’ve been following a blog, Treading my own path by Lindsay, that’s a real serious one, and I came across a clever initiative called Plastic Free July. The Western Metropolitan Regional Council in Perth had the idea in 2011, while the association Earth Carers developed it year after year. As the name itself already says it, this initiative would like people to try to live without plastic for one month. Basically that’s the start, with the hope that people begin to realize how much plastic we use everyday and therefore would like to live in a more conscious way all year round. I think it’s a great idea, so given that I strongly believe in Gandhi’s motto “be the change you would like to see in the world”, not only I decided to take part in it, but I also organized a small meeting in my hometown in order to inform my fellow peeps about this project. Given that we are not in Australia and therefore we do not have the same possibilities, I opted to stress the importance of reusing what we already have, be it also the plastic containers we have at home, and I gave some plastic free alternatives to our regular choices, starting from reusable shopping bags or water bottles.
I had a great audience: my mum, my two aunties, a family’s friend, my cousin with her boyfriend and five friends. Yeah, that’s it. Someone, though, kindly told me that the important thing is to plant the seed that will eventually grow and yeld fruits. I really hope so. In the meanwhile, I will write other posts about plastic free alternatives to products we use daily, so that you too (oh my imaginary public) can try a Plastic Free July, keeping in mind that the important thing is to do our best, be it only one small plastic free thing!
